Helpful information to consider when making a bedding
purchase.
Comfort
The most critical decision to be made when purchasing a new mattress set is the
type of sleep surface your new bed should have.
If the surface feel of the bed isn't right, you won't get a good nights
sleep.
To determine the comfort level you want, try two beds out,
one with a firm surface and one with a plush surface. One or the other will feel
better to you and your sales associate will then show you a selection of bedding with the
sleep surface you like (firm or plush) in a variety of price ranges.
Today's top quality mattress sets are built for superior
comfort. Luxurious new cushioning materials and extra soft surface treatments create
a plusher surface feel while maintaining extra firm support for the body.
Support
Correct support is the essential ingredient for a healthy body. A good
mattress set will gently support your body at all points and keep your spine in the same
shape as someone with good standing posture.
Pay special attention to your shoulders, hips, and lower back
-- the heaviest parts. If there's too little support, you can develop back pain.
On the other hand, if the mattress is too rigid for you, you can experience
uncomfortable pressure.
Don't rely on the product labels to tell you which mattress
will give
you the right support. Lie down and try them! You wouldn't buy a car by
pushing on the fender, don't purchase a mattress without laying on it as if you were ready
to sleep.
Durability
It's the quality of the materials used and how they're put together that determine
how long a mattress set will provide the comfort and
support that you bought then for. The best assurance of good performance over
many years is to buy the highest quality set that
you can afford.
Don't expect a set of bedding to last forever! After
8-10 years of
nightly use, even the best bedding won't provide the same support as when it was
new.
TIP: If your body can stand a harder sleep
surface you can get more value for your money than when purchasing a comparably priced
softer surface mattress set.
Mattresses
Innerspring- The most widely purchased type of bedding uses
the support of tempered steel coils in a variety of configurations. For
every night use look for at least 312 coils in a full size mattress and 375
coils in a queen size (the coils should be 13 gauge wire or better).
For a softer surface mattress we at National Discount Mattress recommend a mattress
with at least 336 coils in the full size mattress paired with a torsion model box spring.
Floatation- Waterbeds are available in two
styles: the traditional hardside waterbed , with a vinyl watermattress, liner and heater
contained in a rigid frame; and the softsided style, which looks like a regular bed and
uses water tubes or bladders for support.
TIP: Be sure the vinyl used in these is at least 20 mil. in thickness. Pay
special attention to seam durability. They should be warranted
for the life of the mattress.
Foam- Foam mattresses offer a wide variety
of "feels." They can be made of a solid core or several layers of foam
laminated together.
The newer "memory foam" (slow recovery response) and the old standard
latex are the best foam mattresses available.
TIP: Whatever foam product you look at should be at least 1.5
density or higher for an every night use bed (latex is generally 4.0 density and
higher).
Foundations
A good foundation is generally made up of springs called torsion models. They
are generally more efficient springs than the old style springs you equate with box
springs. The purpose of the box spring
is to act as a shock absorber, taking a lot of nightly wear and tear
on
a mattress set. Also available are "platform" foundations, which
have
no springs, but are indeed a platform on the inside. Most moderately priced
bedding features this type of foundation.
TIP: Platform type foundations provide for firmer support than boxsprings but
will cause the mattress to wear out sooner.
